About the Average Calculator

Paste or type a list of numbers and this calculator computes the full statistics set in one pass: mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, range, sum, count and standard deviation. It accepts numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines, tolerates stray currency symbols, and explains what each measure means — so you can see why the mean and median disagree on skewed data like house prices or response times.

How to use the Average Calculator

  1. Enter your numbers separated by commas, spaces or lines.
  2. Statistics update instantly as you type.
  3. Compare mean and median to detect skew.
  4. Use standard deviation to judge spread.

Key features

What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle value when sorted. One very large outlier drags the mean up while barely moving the median.
When is there no mode?
When every value appears exactly once, no value is most frequent. Several values tying for most frequent means the data is multi-modal.
